Philosophy
Deer management isn’t about eliminating wildlife—it’s about balance. Without natural predators, deer populations in Sussex have grown beyond sustainable levels. The result is suffering: degraded habitats, starving deer in hard winters, and frustrated landowners watching their investments destroyed.
My approach has three priorities:
- Advance land management — Protecting crops, woodland, and gardens from unsustainable deer pressure
- Respect the environment — Maintaining healthy deer populations that the habitat can support
- Honour the deer — Ensuring every animal is treated with respect and dispatched humanely
This isn’t trophy hunting. It’s practical wildlife management done properly.
Humane Methods
Animal welfare is non-negotiable. Every deer I take must present a safe, humane shot—or I don’t take it.
The Principle
A well-placed rifle shot is the most humane method of deer control available. The animal is unaware of any danger. Death is instantaneous. There is no chase, no stress, no suffering.
Compare this to the alternatives: starvation when populations outstrip food supply, disease transmission in overcrowded populations, or road collisions that leave animals to die slowly.
In Practice
- Calibre selection — I use deer-legal rifles designed for clean, instant kills
- Shot placement — Only heart/lung shots that guarantee rapid death
- Range discipline — No shots beyond distances where I can guarantee accuracy
- Conditions — Poor light, high wind, or obstructed views mean no shot
- Follow-up — If any animal shows signs of being wounded, immediate follow-up is the absolute priority
If conditions aren’t right, I wait. There will always be another opportunity.
Safety & Compliance
Qualifications
DSC1 Certified — The Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 covers:
- Deer biology and behaviour
- Legal requirements and seasons
- Safe shooting practice
- Humane dispatch
- Carcass handling
BASC Membership — The British Association for Shooting and Conservation provides:
- £10 million public liability insurance
- Legal advice and support
- Code of practice compliance
Firearms Certificate — All rifles held on a valid FAC with appropriate conditions for deer.
Legal Compliance
I operate strictly within the law:
- Deer Act 1991 — Governs species, seasons, and methods
- Firearms legislation — Certificate conditions, storage, transport
- Landowner permissions — Written agreements for all land
Risk Assessment
Before any stalking session, I assess:
- Safe backstops for all potential shots
- Proximity to dwellings, roads, footpaths
- Livestock and other animals
- Access and egress routes
- Communication with landowner
If conditions aren’t safe, I don’t shoot.
Working With Landowners
Discretion
Your privacy matters. I operate:
- Early mornings (typically 4-8am) before most people are active
- Sound-moderated rifle significantly reduces noise
- Unmarked vehicle — no signage advertising my presence
- No social media — I don’t photograph or post about your property
Your neighbours don’t need to know. Your privacy is respected absolutely.
Communication
You’ll always know what’s happening on your land:
- Advance notice of planned visits
- Text confirmation when I arrive and leave
- Summary reports of each session
- Seasonal updates on deer activity and cull numbers
Some landowners want detailed involvement; others prefer I handle everything quietly. I adapt to your preference.
Flexibility
I work around your needs:
- Avoid specific areas during lambing, shoots, or events
- Adjust timing if you have early starts
- Coordinate with other land users (farm workers, gamekeepers)
- Pause operations during sensitive periods
Environmental Responsibility
Sustainable Populations
The goal isn’t extermination—it’s sustainability. A healthy deer population:
- Allows woodland to regenerate naturally
- Reduces crop and garden damage to acceptable levels
- Supports diverse ground flora and understorey
- Minimises deer-vehicle collisions
- Prevents boom-bust population cycles
I aim for populations the habitat can support without degradation.
Venison
Nothing is wasted. All carcasses are:
- Processed for human consumption where suitable
- Inspected for signs of disease (reported if found)
- Handled hygienically throughout
Venison is one of the most sustainable, lowest-impact meats available. Deer management produces high-quality, free-range protein as a byproduct.
Wider Impact
Effective deer management benefits:
- Woodland biodiversity — Ground flora, nesting birds, invertebrates
- Agricultural productivity — Reduced crop losses
- Road safety — Fewer deer-vehicle collisions
- Deer welfare — Populations in balance with food supply
What I Don’t Do
To be clear about boundaries:
- Trophy hunting — I’m not interested in “big heads”
- Paying clients — This isn’t a commercial shooting operation
- Unnecessary culling — I take what’s needed for management, no more
- Cowboy operations — No cutting corners on safety or welfare
- Social media hunting content — Your property stays private
