Why Credentials Matter
When someone with a rifle operates on your land, you need certainty. Certainty they’re qualified. Certainty they’re insured. Certainty that if something goes wrong, you’re protected.
I take this seriously. Here’s exactly what I bring to every job.
Professional Qualifications
DSC1 Certification
The Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 is the industry-standard qualification for deer management in the UK. It covers:
- Deer biology and identification — Understanding species, behaviour, and population dynamics
- Legal framework — The Deer Act 1991, seasons, methods, and exemptions
- Safe shooting practice — Rifle handling, backstops, and risk assessment
- Humane dispatch — Shot placement for instant, clean kills
- Carcass handling — Hygiene, gralloch, and food safety
Passing DSC1 requires both written examination and practical assessment. It demonstrates competence to a nationally recognised standard.
Firearms Certificate
I hold a valid Firearms Certificate (FAC) issued by MET Police, with conditions specifically authorising deer-legal rifles and calibres. This includes:
- Regular police vetting
- Secure storage requirements
- Compliance checks
- Appropriate calibre authorisation for all UK deer species
Shooting Background
Beyond deer stalking, I’ve represented Great Britain at international level in two shooting disciplines — fullbore target rifle and smallbore. This background means:
- Exceptional marksmanship — Precision shot placement every time
- Discipline under pressure — Calm, controlled execution
- Equipment expertise — Understanding ballistics, zeroing, and rifle maintenance
Insurance & Liability
BASC Membership
I’m a member of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), which provides:
| Coverage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Public Liability | £10 million |
| Employers Liability | £10 million |
| Product Liability | £10 million |
| Legal Expenses | Included |
This means if anything goes wrong — property damage, personal injury, any incident — there’s comprehensive cover in place. You’re protected. I’m protected.
What This Means For You
When I operate on your land:
- You have no liability for my actions
- Any damage I cause is fully covered
- You’re protected against third-party claims
- There’s legal support if issues arise
Many landowners don’t realise they could be liable if an uninsured stalker causes problems on their property. Working with an insured professional eliminates this risk entirely.
Legal Compliance
The Deer Act 1991
All my operations comply fully with the Deer Act 1991, which governs:
Species and Seasons
- Fallow bucks: 1 August – 30 April
- Fallow does: 1 November – 31 March
- Roe bucks: 1 April – 31 October
- Roe does: 1 November – 31 March
- Muntjac: No close season
Permitted Methods
- Deer-legal rifles only (minimum calibre and muzzle energy requirements)
- Shotguns only in specific circumstances
- No snares, nets, or traps
Time Restrictions
- Specific exemptions for preventing crop damage
Landowner Permissions
I always obtain written permission before operating on any land. This protects both of us and creates a clear record of authorisation.
Carcass Handling
All deer are handled in accordance with food hygiene regulations:
- Prompt gralloch (field dressing)
- Temperature control
- Traceability records
- Processing by licensed game dealers
Safety Protocols
Before Every Session
- Risk assessment — Identify hazards, backstops, proximity to buildings/roads
- Weather check — Wind, light conditions, visibility
- Communication — Confirm with landowner, note emergency contacts
- Equipment check — Rifle, optics, ammunition, first aid
During Operations
- Positive target identification — 100% certain before any shot
- Safe backstop — Every shot has a guaranteed safe impact area
- No risky shots — If conditions aren’t perfect, I don’t shoot
- Immediate follow-up — Any indication of a wounded animal takes absolute priority
Emergency Procedures
- First aid kit carried at all times
- Mobile phone with emergency contacts
- Knowledge of nearest A&E and vet
- Incident reporting procedures in place
What I Won’t Do
Being qualified means knowing limits:
- No shots without safe backstops — Ever
- No shooting near footpaths when in use
- No shooting in poor visibility
- No shooting if I’m not 100% confident of a clean kill
Walking away from a shot is always an option. There will be another opportunity.
